The 2011 Virginia Commonwealth University men's basketball team, led by second-year coach Shaka Smart, were the subject of controversy after receiving an at-large bid into the 68-team NCAA tournament field. After losing 5 of 8 games in the month of February, the VCU Rams defied the pundits and the odds, defeating teams from the PAC-10, Big East, Big 10, ACC, and Big 12 in the most statistically improbable March runs in tournament history. Fueled by the doubters, this cast of unknowns captured the imagination of the sporting world, by breaking school, conference, and tournament records in an epic 3-week journey.
